How to use XML to JSON

 1. Paste well-formed XML.
 2. Choose compact objects or an ordered node tree.
 3. Convert and inspect attributes, text and repeated elements.

Format behavior and important limits

Compact mode groups repeated child names into arrays and places attributes in @attributes and direct text in #text. Ordered mode emits a node tree with children in document order, retaining mixed-content ordering and CDATA nodes.

XML and JSON do not have a universal one-to-one mapping. Compact mode loses mixed child/text order and omits comments; choose ordered mode when order matters. DOCTYPE declarations are rejected.

Example: repeated XML elements become a JSON array

Choose Compact objects for the mapping below. The ordered mode serves a different purpose: retaining child-node order when text and elements are mixed.

Example input

<items>
One

Two
</items>

Expected result

{"items":{"item":[{"@attributes":{"id":"a"},"#text":"One"},{"@attributes":{"id":"b"},"#text":"Two"}]}}

Common questions and errors

Which mode should I use for mixed content?

For
Hello world!
, use Ordered node tree when the sequence of text and child elements matters. Compact objects are convenient for data-like XML but do not model every ordering detail.

Why are numbers still strings?

XML element text and attribute values are text. This converter does not guess a numeric or boolean type, so an ID such as 00123 is not silently changed.

DOCTYPE is rejected

Documents containing DOCTYPE or ENTITY declarations are intentionally rejected. Use XML that does not depend on a DTD or external entity definitions.

Privacy and browser support

Your input is handled in this browser tab. Selected files and entered text are not sent to Varento Tools by this tool. Some specialized libraries load only when needed. A browser with JavaScript and sufficient device memory is required. Read our local-processing explanation.

Frequently asked questions

Is this tool free without daily usage limits?

Yes. Varento Tools has no signup, accounts, usage-count caps, paywalls or watermarks. Device memory, format support and browser restrictions can still limit technically demanding files.

What happens to repeated elements?

Compact mode turns repeated sibling names into arrays. Ordered mode keeps every child as a separate entry in its original sequence.

Is my input uploaded?

No. This utility processes input in the current browser tab. The tool code does not upload your files, tokens or text to a processing API.

What limitations should I know?

XML and JSON do not have a universal one-to-one mapping. Compact mode loses mixed child/text order and omits comments; choose ordered mode when order matters. DOCTYPE declarations are rejected.
