How to compress PNG images

  1. Select one or more supported images.
  2. Choose quality/PNG settings or Fit under a target size. Enter a maximum KB size if targeting.
  3. Optionally allow smaller dimensions when the target needs fewer pixels.
  4. Compress, compare actual bytes and dimensions, and download the successful results.

Lossless PNG optimization versus fewer colours

The default mode encodes the decoded image pixels using a PNG optimizer. It can select a more efficient PNG representation without deliberately changing those pixels. Transparency is supported. Pixel fidelity is different from keeping every file property: metadata, embedded profiles and animation are not preserved by this still-image workflow.

Reduced-colour mode uses a smaller palette. This can work well for icons, interface graphics and diagrams, but it may change gradients, subtle shades and semi-transparent edges. Check the result before replacing an original. For photographs without transparency, converting to JPG or WebP may save more space than keeping PNG.

PNG files that are already optimized, very small, or dominated by unpredictable detail may not get smaller. We report actual bytes instead of a guaranteed percentage. If the original is returned, it retains its original metadata and file contents. Browser memory is still needed while decoding and optimizing large images.

Target-size mode aims for a maximum, not an exact byte count. One KB means 1,024 bytes here. JPEG and WebP search for a quality setting within the target. PNG follows your selected lossless or reduced-palette mode. Smaller dimensions are used only if you explicitly enable them. If the target cannot be met, the tool shows an error instead of offering an over-target file as a success. An unchanged original that is already small enough can retain its original metadata.

Frequently asked questions

Is this tool free without daily usage limits?

Yes. Varento Tools has no signup, accounts, usage-count caps, paywalls or watermarks. Device memory, format support and browser restrictions can still limit technically demanding files.

Does the lossless mode keep every pixel?

It preserves the decoded still-image pixels. Metadata, colour-profile interpretation and animation are not covered by that claim.

Will transparency remain?

Yes. PNG output supports alpha transparency, including partially transparent pixels.

Why choose reduced colours?

A smaller palette can reduce some graphics further, but may change colours or gradients. It is an optional lossy step.

Why did a PNG not shrink?

It may already be efficiently encoded. The tool compares sizes and offers the original if the new file would be larger.
