How the result is produced
Dates are compared as calendar days at UTC midnight, so daylight-saving clock changes do not turn a calendar day into a fraction. Ordinary mode reports the signed difference; inclusive mode counts both endpoints.
These are calendar days, not working days or hours in a local timezone. A reversed range produces a negative difference. Same-day inclusive counting returns one.
