How to remove original image metadata

  1. Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP image.
  2. Select Remove metadata to decode and re-encode a copy.
  3. Download the new image; your source file stays unchanged.
  4. Check the exported file with a metadata inspector before sensitive sharing.

Metadata removal is not complete anonymity

Camera images can contain EXIF fields such as camera model, date and GPS coordinates, while files may also contain XMP or other metadata. This tool does not edit those fields in place. It decodes the image and exports a new canvas-encoded file without copying the original metadata blocks.

JPG and WebP exports use lossy encoding, so the resulting file is not a lossless metadata-only edit. PNG output can retain decoded pixels, but colour-profile interpretation and animation are not guaranteed. Dimensions are kept. A browser may add its own basic format information; the claim is removal of original metadata, not a file with literally no metadata of any kind.

Faces, documents, signs, reflections and locations visible in the picture are unchanged. The original filename can also disclose information. Rename the output where appropriate and use a dedicated inspector to verify a sensitive export. Keeping and sharing the original instead of the new copy would retain the original data.

Privacy and browser support

Your input is handled in this browser tab. Selected files and entered text are not sent to Varento Tools by this tool. Some specialized libraries load only when needed. A browser with JavaScript and sufficient device memory is required. Read our local-processing explanation.

Frequently asked questions

Is this tool free without daily usage limits?

Yes. Varento Tools has no signup, accounts, usage-count caps, paywalls or watermarks. Device memory, format support and browser restrictions can still limit technically demanding files.

Does this remove GPS coordinates?

Original GPS metadata is not copied into the newly encoded image. Verify sensitive outputs with a metadata inspector.

Is JPEG quality unchanged?

No. JPEG is re-encoded at a high quality setting. Use a metadata-only editor when exact compressed image preservation is required.

Does it blur faces or locations?

No. It only changes the file encoding and copied metadata, not identifying details in the visible pixels.

Does the original image change?

No. You download a new copy. Keep track of which file you share.
