Choose a PDF to optimize
Structural rewriting does not recompress embedded images. Flattening makes text unselectable. Either method can produce a larger PDF.
How to optimize a PDF
- Choose your PDF.
- Keep Preserve selectable text for a structural rewrite, or choose the image-heavy option to flatten pages.
- Optimize and compare the original and result sizes.
- Download the new PDF only if its size and appearance suit your needs.
Two methods, different consequences
Preserve selectable text rewrites the PDF structure with object streams. It can reduce redundant structural overhead, but it does not downsample or recompress embedded images. An already efficient PDF may remain the same size or become larger. This mode is preferable when selectable text is important, but it is not a promise to preserve every interactive or document-level feature.
The image-heavy method renders each page and saves it as a JPEG image in a new PDF. That can help some scans or inefficient image-heavy files. It also flattens text and vector graphics: text will no longer be selectable, searchability can be lost, and fine details can become softer. It is not OCR.
The result shows actual byte counts and percentage change, including increases. No compressor can guarantee a fixed reduction for every PDF. Keep originals, inspect small text and signatures, and avoid flattening a document if accessibility or searchable content is required.
Privacy and browser support
Your input is handled in this browser tab. Selected files and entered text are not sent to Varento Tools by this tool. Some specialized libraries load only when needed. A browser with JavaScript and sufficient device memory is required. Read our local-processing explanation.

Frequently asked questions
Is this tool free without daily usage limits?
Yes. Varento Tools has no signup, accounts, usage-count caps, paywalls or watermarks. Device memory, format support and browser restrictions can still limit technically demanding files.
Can this guarantee a smaller PDF?
No. The result reports the real size change. A simple or already optimized PDF can grow.
Will text remain selectable?
The preserve-text method keeps page text content; the image-heavy method flattens every page into an image.
Does preserve mode compress photographs?
No. It rewrites PDF structure without recompressing embedded image data.
Can it make a PDF exactly 1 MB?
There is no exact-size target. Compare the output and use another workflow if a submission requires a strict byte limit.
